Natural Product Identification
Common Namebenzoate
DescriptionBenzoate, also known as benzeneformate or benzenemethanoate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as benzoic acids. These are organic Compounds containing a benzene ring which bears at least one carboxyl group. Benzoate is a drug. Benzoate is a weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). In humans, benzoate is involved in paclitaxel action pathway. Outside of the human body, benzoate has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as mulberries, herbs and spices, grass pea, taro, and lemon balms. This could make benzoate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Benzoic acid is metabolized by butyrate-CoA ligase into an intermediate product, benzoyl-CoA, which is then metabolized by glycine N-acyltransferase into hippuric acid.
