Description | Galanolactone belongs to the class of organic compounds known as gamma butyrolactones. Gamma butyrolactones are compounds containing a gamma butyrolactone moiety, which consists of an aliphatic five-member ring with four carbon atoms, one oxygen atom, and bears a ketone group on the carbon adjacent to the oxygen atom. Galanolactone is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). 3-(2-{5,5,8a-trimethyl-hexahydro-1h-spiro[naphthalene-2,2'-oxiran]-1-yl}ethylidene)oxolan-2-one is found in Aframomum alboviolaceum. Galanolactone is a diterpenoid lactone first isolated from ginger. |
