Natural Product Identification
Common Name2,2-dichloro-n-[1,3-dihydroxy-1-(4-nitrophenyl)propan-2-yl]ethanimidic acid
DescriptionTyfomycine, also known as levoplast or levosin, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as nitrobenzenes. Nitrobenzenes are compounds containing a nitrobenzene moiety, which consists of a benzene ring with a carbon bearing a nitro group. Tyfomycine is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). 2,2-dichloro-n-[1,3-dihydroxy-1-(4-nitrophenyl)propan-2-yl]ethanimidic acid is found in Streptomyces albidoflavus, Streptomyces coelicolor, Streptomyces phaeochromogenes and Streptomyces venezuelae. High-level resistance is conferred by the cat-gene; this gene codes for an enzyme called chloramphenicol acetyltransferase, which inactivates chloramphenicol by covalently linking one or two acetyl groups, derived from acetyl-S-coenzyme A, to the hydroxyl groups on the chloramphenicol molecule.
