These are polycyclic compounds containing a phenanthrene moiety, which is a tricyclic aromatic compound with three non-linearly fused benzene. 11-hydroxy-10-methoxy-2,4a,6a,9,12b,14a-hexamethyl-8-oxo-1,3,4,5,6,13,14,14b-octahydropicene-2-carboxylic acid is found in Tripterygium doianum and Tripterygium hypoglaucum. 11-Hydroxy-10-methoxy-2,4a,6a,9,12b,14a-hexamethyl-8-oxo-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,6a,8,12b,13,14,14a,14b-tetradecahydropicene-2-carboxylic acid is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa).
