These are amino acids in which the amino group is attached to the carbon atom immediately adjacent to the carboxylate group (alpha carbon). 5-hydroxy-6-[2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)ethoxy]-2-({[3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxan-2-yl]oxy}methyl)-4-[(3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-methyloxan-2-yl)oxy]oxan-3-yl 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)prop-2-enoate is found in Cistanche deserticola. 5-Hydroxy-6-[2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)ethoxy]-2-({[3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxan-2-yl]oxy}methyl)-4-[(3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-methyloxan-2-yl)oxy]oxan-3-yl 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)prop-2-enoate is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa).
