DescriptionAsterone belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 20-oxosteroids. These are steroid derivatives carrying a C=O group at the 20-position of the steroid skeleton. Thus, asterone is considered to be a steroid. 1-[(1s,3as,3bs,5s,5as,7s,9as,11as)-5,7-dihydroxy-9a,11a-dimethyl-1h,2h,3h,3ah,3bh,4h,5h,5ah,6h,7h,8h,9h,11h-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-1-yl]ethanone is found in Asterias forbesi, Asterias rubens, Lethasterias nanimensis, Luidia maculata and Meyenaster gelatinosus. It was first documented in 1984 (PMID: 6537045). Based on a literature review very few articles have been published on Asterone (PMID: 9827037).
