Common Name10-hydroxystearic acid
DescriptionXi-10-Hydroxyoctadecanoic acid, also known as 10-hydroxystearic acid or 10-hydroxy-octadecanoate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as long-chain fatty acids. These are fatty acids with an aliphatic tail that contains between 13 and 21 carbon atoms. A hydroxy fatty acid that is octadecanoic acid carrying a hydroxy group at position 10. Xi-10-Hydroxyoctadecanoic acid is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. Outside of the human body, xi-10-Hydroxyoctadecanoic acid has been detected, but not quantified in, herbs and spices. 10-hydroxystearic acid is found in Aloe ferox. 10-hydroxystearic acid was first documented in 2011 (PMID: 21207107). This could make XI-10-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods (PMID: 30506254).
