| Description | Territrem B belongs to the class of organic compounds known as naphthopyrans. Naphthopyrans are compounds containing a pyran ring fused to a naphthalene moiety. Furan is a 6 membered-ring non-aromatic ring with five carbon and one oxygen atoms. Naphthalene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon made up of two fused benzene rings. Territrem B is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Territrem B is a potentially toxic compound. Certain reproductive effects in fertility, growth, and development for males and females have been linked specifically to organophosphate pesticide exposure. When there is an accumulation of ACh at autonomic ganglia this causes overstimulation of nicotinic expression in the sympathetic system. The biotransformation of territrems involves hydroxylation and 0-demethylation. Atropine is a muscarinic antagonist, and thus blocks the action of acetylcholine peripherally. |
