DescriptionSclareapinone belongs to the class of organic compounds known as naphthoquinones. Naphthoquinones are compounds containing a naphthohydroquinone moiety, which consists of a benzene ring linearly fused to a bezene-1,4-dione (quinone). Sclareapinone is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, Sclareapinone has been detected, but not quantified in, a few different foods, such as alcoholic beverages, herbs and spices, and tea. 8-(4-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-oxopentyl)-3-isopropyl-7-methylnaphthalene-1,2-dione is found in Salvia prionitis and Salvia sclarea. This could make sclareapinone a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
