Common Namegeddyl alcohol
DescriptionSapiol, also known as geddyl alcohol or tetratriacontanol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as fatty alcohols. These are aliphatic alcohols consisting of a chain of a least six carbon atoms. Thus, sapiol is considered to be a fatty alcohol lipid molecule. Sapiol is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. Outside of the human body, Sapiol has been detected, but not quantified in, fats and oils. geddyl alcohol is found in Agave americana, Chamaecrista pumila, Clerodendrum phlomidis, Delavaya toxocarpa, Echinops niveus, Prosopis glandulosa and Prunus laurocerasus. geddyl alcohol was first documented in 2012 (PMID: 23451497). This could make sapiol a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
