Natural Product Identification
Common Name1-(2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxy-3-methylphenyl)ethanone
Description2'-Hydroxy-4',6'-dimethoxy-3'-methylacetophenone, also known as methylxanthoxylin, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as alkyl-phenylketones. These are aromatic compounds containing a ketone substituted by one alkyl group, and a phenyl group. 2'-Hydroxy-4',6'-dimethoxy-3'-methylacetophenone is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, 2'-Hydroxy-4',6'-dimethoxy-3'-methylacetophenone has been detected, but not quantified in, fruits. 1-(2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxy-3-methylphenyl)ethanone is found in Euphorbia portulacoides and Syzygium cumini. This could make 2'-hydroxy-4',6'-dimethoxy-3'-methylacetophenone a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
