Natural Product Identification
Common Name(5-{[3,4-dihydroxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy}-3,4-dihydroxy-6-{[5-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4-oxochromen-7-yl]oxy}oxan-2-yl)methyl acetate
Description(5-{[3,4-Dihydroxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy}-3,4-dihydroxy-6-{[5-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4-oxo-4H-chromen-7-yl]oxy}oxan-2-yl)methyl acetate belongs to the class of organic compounds known as ajmaline-sarpagine alkaloids. These are organic compounds containing either of the ajmalan, sarpagan skeleton, or derivative thereof. The Sarpagine (Akuammidine) group, based on the sarpagan nucleus, arises from bond formation between C-16 and C-5 of the corynantheine precursor. (5-{[3,4-dihydroxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy}-3,4-dihydroxy-6-{[5-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4-oxochromen-7-yl]oxy}oxan-2-yl)methyl acetate is found in Paullinia pinnata. Ajmaline alkaloids are based on a 17,19-secoyohimban skeleton (oxayohimban) which is invariably present as an ether (5-{[3,4-dihydroxy-4-(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy}-3,4-dihydroxy-6-{[5-hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4-oxo-4H-chromen-7-yl]oxy}oxan-2-yl)methyl acetate is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa).
