These are lignans with a structure based on the 1-phenyltetralin skeleton carrying a hydroxyl group at the 9- and the 9'- position. 8-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-6,7-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dimethoxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalen-2-ol is found in Acer truncatum, Ailanthus altissima, Avicennia marina, Bambusa emeiensis, Berberis koreana, Betula maximowicziana, Laguncularia racemosa, Litsea glutinosa, Machilus thunbergii, Phellodendron amurense, Phyllostachys edulis, Salacia chinensis, Santalum album, Ulmus thomasii and Zanthoxylum ailanthoides. Lyoniresinol is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa).
