Description(S)-tembetarine belongs to the class of organic compounds known as benzylisoquinolines. These are organic compounds containing an isoquinoline to which a benzyl group is attached (S)-tembetarine is a secondary metabolite. Secondary metabolites are metabolically or physiologically non-essential metabolites that may serve a role as defense or signalling molecules. In some cases they are simply molecules that arise from the incomplete metabolism of other secondary metabolites. (1s)-7-hydroxy-1-[(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)methyl]-6-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-1h-isoquinolin-2-ium is found in Cymbopetalum brasiliense, Parabaena sagittata, Thalictrum foliolosum, Tinospora cordifolia, Xylopia parviflora, Zanthoxylum chalybeum, Zanthoxylum gilletii, Zanthoxylum martinicense, Zanthoxylum mayu, Zanthoxylum nitidum, Zanthoxylum rhoifolium and Zanthoxylum usambarense. (1s)-7-hydroxy-1-[(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)methyl]-6-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-1h-isoquinolin-2-ium was first documented in 2013 (PMID: 23823874). Based on a literature review very few articles have been published on (S)-tembetarine (PMID: 26944237).
