| Common Name | (4e)-3,5,5-trimethyl-4-[(2e,4e)-3,7,12,16-tetramethyl-18-(2,6,6-trimethyl-4-oxocyclohex-2-en-1-ylidene)octadeca-2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16-octaen-1-ylidene]cyclohex-2-en-1-one |
|---|
| Description | (4E)-3,5,5-trimethyl-4-[(2E,4E)-3,7,12,16-tetramethyl-18-(2,6,6-trimethyl-4-oxocyclohex-2-en-1-ylidene)octadeca-2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16-octaen-1-ylidene]cyclohex-2-en-1-one belongs to the class of organic compounds known as xanthophylls. These are carotenoids containing an oxygenated carotene backbone. Carotenes are characterized by the presence of two end-groups (mostly cyclohexene rings, but also cyclopentene rings or acyclic groups) linked by a long branched alkyl chain. Carotenes belonging form a subgroup of the carotenoids family. (4e)-3,5,5-trimethyl-4-[(2e,4e)-3,7,12,16-tetramethyl-18-(2,6,6-trimethyl-4-oxocyclohex-2-en-1-ylidene)octadeca-2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16-octaen-1-ylidene]cyclohex-2-en-1-one is found in Taxus baccata. Xanthophylls arise by oxygenation of the carotene backbone (4E)-3,5,5-trimethyl-4-[(2E,4E)-3,7,12,16-tetramethyl-18-(2,6,6-trimethyl-4-oxocyclohex-2-en-1-ylidene)octadeca-2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16-octaen-1-ylidene]cyclohex-2-en-1-one is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). |
