DescriptionFilicin, also known as filixic acid or filixsaeure, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as alkyl-phenylketones. These are aromatic compounds containing a ketone substituted by one alkyl group, and a phenyl group. Filicin is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Filicin has been studied for its anthelmintic activity. Filicin is a chemical compound that has been isolated from ferns of the genus Dryopteris. Chemical analysis of filicins in fern extracts can assist in determining taxonomy. A variety of chemically related compounds, sometimes referred to collectively as filicins, have also been isolated from ferns. filicin is found in Dryopteris filix-mas and Hypericum japonicum. It has been isoloated from the male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas).
