These are diterpene lactones with a structure characterized by the presence of a gamma-lactone fused to a guaiane, forming 3,6,9-trimethyl-azuleno[4,5-b]furan-2-one or a derivative. 4,5-dihydroxy-2-({5-methyl-3,8-dimethylidene-2-oxo-octahydroazuleno[6,5-b]furan-5-yl}oxy)oxan-3-yl acetate is found in Helenium amarum. 4,5-Dihydroxy-2-({5-methyl-3,8-dimethylidene-2-oxo-dodecahydroazuleno[6,5-b]furan-5-yl}oxy)oxan-3-yl acetate is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). |
