| Description | (R)-p-Mentha-1,8-dien-7-ol, also known as (R)-perillyl alcohol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as menthane monoterpenoids. These are monoterpenoids with a structure based on the o-, m-, or p-menthane backbone. P-menthane consists of the cyclohexane ring with a methyl group and a (2-methyl)-propyl group at the 1 and 4 ring position, respectively. The o- and m- menthanes are much rarer, and presumably arise by alkyl migration of p-menthanes (R)-p-Mentha-1,8-dien-7-ol is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, (R)-p-Mentha-1,8-dien-7-ol has been detected, but not quantified in, herbs and spices. 2-[(7-{[4,5-dihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)-3-[(3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-methyloxan-2-yl)oxy]oxan-2-yl]oxy}-2,6,6,10,16-pentamethyl-18-(2-methylprop-1-en-1-yl)-19,21-dioxahexacyclo[18.2.1.0¹,¹⁴.0²,¹¹.0⁵,¹⁰.0¹⁵,²⁰]tricosan-16-yl)oxy]-6-methyloxane-3,4,5-triol is found in Hovenia dulcis and Tetrapleura tetraptera. This could make (R)-p-mentha-1,8-dien-7-ol a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. |
