Natural Product Identification
Common Name4-isopropyl-1,6-dimethyl-3,4,4a,5,8,8a-hexahydronaphthalene
DescriptionBeta-Cadinene, also known as β-cadinene or cadina-3,9-diene, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as sesquiterpenoids. These are terpenes with three consecutive isoprene units. Beta-Cadinene is possibly neutral. Beta-Cadinene is a green and woody tasting compound. Outside of the human body, beta-Cadinene has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as common oregano, common thymes, gingers, and sweet basils. 4-isopropyl-1,6-dimethyl-3,4,4a,5,8,8a-hexahydronaphthalene is found in Acorus gramineus, Baccharis genistelloides, Larix gmelinii, Solidago canadensis and Valeriana officinalis. This could make beta-cadinene a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
