Common Name(-)-Cinchonidine
DescriptionCinchonidine, also known as a-quinidine or cinchovatine, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as cinchona alkaloids. These are alkaloids structurally characterized by the presence of the cinchonan skeleton, which consists of a quinoline linked to an azabicyclo[2.2.2]Octane moiety. Cinchonidine is a very strong basic compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, Cinchonidine has been detected, but not quantified in, a few different foods, such as fruits, herbs and spices, and olives. This could make cinchonidine a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. It is used in asymmetric synthesis in organic chemistry. Cinchonidine is an alkaloid found in Cinchona officinalis and Gongronema latifolium. (-)-Cinchonidine is found in Ciliosemina pedunculata, Cinchona calisaya, Cinchona officinalis, Cinchona pubescens and Remijia pedunculata. (-)-Cinchonidine was first documented in 1998 (PMID: 9776305). It is a stereoisomer and pseudo-enantiomer of cinchonine.
