These are keto acids with a 6 to 12 carbon atoms long side chain. 3-Oxooctanoic acid is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. 3-Oxooctanoic acid exists in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans.
