| Common Name | 3a,7a-Dihydroxy-5b-cholest-24-enoyl-CoA |
|---|
| Description | 3A,7a-Dihydroxy-5b-cholest-24-enoyl-CoA belongs to the class of organic compounds known as phosphatidylcholines. These are glycerophosphocholines in which the two free -OH are attached to one fatty acid each through an ester linkage. 3A,7a-Dihydroxy-5b-cholest-24-enoyl-CoA is a strong basic compound (based on its pKa). Within humans, 3a,7a-dihydroxy-5b-cholest-24-enoyl-CoA participates in a number of enzymatic reactions. In particular, 3a,7a-dihydroxy-5b-cholest-24-enoyl-CoA can be biosynthesized from 3a,7a-dihydroxy-5b-cholestanoyl-CoA through its interaction with the enzyme peroxisomal acyl-coenzyme A oxidase 2. In addition, 3a,7a-dihydroxy-5b-cholest-24-enoyl-CoA can be converted into 3 alpha,7 alpha,24-trihydroxy-5beta-cholestanoyl-CoA through its interaction with the enzyme peroxisomal multifunctional enzyme type 2. 3A,7a-Dihydroxy-5b-cholest-24-enoyl-CoA is an intermediate involved in bile acid synthesis, specifically in the synthesis of chenodeoxyglycocholate. In humans, 3a,7a-dihydroxy-5b-cholest-24-enoyl-CoA is involved in cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (ctx). Bile acids are physiological detergents that facilitate excretion, absorption, and transport of fats and sterols in the intestine and liver. Bile acids have potent toxic properties (e.G., Membrane disruption) and there are a plethora of mechanisms to limit their accumulation in blood and tissues. The distinction between different bile acids is minute, depends only on presence or absence of hydroxyl groups on positions 3, 7, and 12. They exist as anions at physiological pH and, consequently, require a carrier for transport across the membranes of the enterohepatic tissues. They modulate bile flow and lipid secretion, are essential for the absorption of dietary fats and vitamins, and have been implicated in the regulation of all the key enzymes involved in cholesterol homeostasis. |
