Common NameTetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5n-3)
DescriptionTetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3), also known as 9Z,12Z,15Z,18Z,21Z-tetracosapentaenoate or 24:5 (N-3), belongs to the class of organic compounds known as very long-chain fatty acids. These are fatty acids with an aliphatic tail that contains at least 22 carbon atoms. Tetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3) is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. Within humans, tetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3) participates in a number of enzymatic reactions. In particular, tetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3) can be biosynthesized from docosapentaenoic acid (22N-3) through the action of the enzyme elongation OF very long chain fatty acids protein 4. In addition, tetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3) can be converted into tetracosahexaenoic acid through the action of the enzyme fatty acid desaturase 2. In humans, tetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3) is involved in alpha linolenic acid and linoleic acid metabolism. Outside of the human body, Tetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3) is found, on average, in the highest concentration within milk (cow). This could make tetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3) a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. A very long-chain omega-3 fatty acid that is tetracosanoic acid having five double bonds located at positions 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 (the (9Z,12Z,15Z,18Z,21Z-isomer).
