Description2,3-Dinor-6-keto-prostaglandin F1 a, also known as 2,3-dinor-11b-PGF2a, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as prostaglandins and related compounds. These are unsaturated carboxylic acids consisting of a 20 carbon skeleton that also contains a five member ring, and are based upon the fatty acid arachidonic acid. These molecules are extremely potent, able to cause profound physiological effects at very dilute concentrations. 2,3-Dinor-6-keto-prostaglandin F1 a is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). The eicosanoids consist of the prostaglandins (PGs), thromboxanes (TXs), leukotrienes (LTs), and lipoxins (LXs). PGI2 plays an important cardioprotective role increasingly appreciated in recent years in light of adverse effects of COX-2 inhibitors in clinical trials. 2,3-Dinor-6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha was first documented in 1984 (PMID: 6231483). Prostaglandins were originally shown to be synthesized in the prostate gland, thromboxanes from platelets (thrombocytes), and leukotrienes from leukocytes, hence the derivation of their names.
