DescriptionMethyl indole-3-carboxylate, also known as 3-carbomethoxyindole or 3-methoxycarbonylindole, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as indolecarboxylic acids and derivatives. Indolecarboxylic acids and derivatives are compounds containing a carboxylic acid group (or a derivative thereof) linked to an indole. Indole 3-carboxylic acid methyl ester is found in Arabidopsis thaliana, Aristolochia cucurbitifolia, Aristolochia kaempferi, Balansia epichloe, Botryocladia leptopoda, Epichloe festucae, Himalaiella deltoidea, Ligularia dentata, Meehania urticifolia, Pachliopta aristolochiae, Penicillium herquei, Pinus sylvestris, Taraxacum mongolicum, Xylaria obovata and Zymoseptoria tritici. Methyl indole-3-carboxylate is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa).
