| Description | 6-Hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin belongs to the class of organic compounds known as pterins and derivatives. These are polycyclic aromatic compounds containing a pterin moiety, which consist of a pteridine ring bearing a ketone and an amine group to form 2-aminopteridin-4(3H)-one. 6-Hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin is a strong basic compound (based on its pKa). 6-Hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin exists in both E. Coli (prokaryote) and yeast (eukaryote). Within yeast, 6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin participates in a number of enzymatic reactions. In particular, glycolaldehyde and 6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin can be biosynthesized from 7,8-dihydroneopterin through its interaction with the enzyme folic acid synthesis. In addition, 6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin can be converted into 6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin diphosphate through its interaction with the enzyme folic acid synthesis. 2-Amino-4-hydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)-7,8-dihydropteridine is found in Arabidopsis thaliana and Trypanosoma brucei. In yeast, 6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin is involved in the metabolic pathway called tetrahydrofolate biosynthesis pathway. |
