| Common Name | Monardaein |
|---|
| Description | Monardaein belongs to the class of organic compounds known as anthocyanidin 3-o-6-p-coumaroyl glycosides. These are anthocyanidin 3-O-glycosides where the carbohydrate moiety is esterified at the C6 position with a p-coumaric acid. P-coumaric acid is an organic derivative of cinnamic acid, that carries a hydroxyl group at the 4-position of the benzene ring. Thus, monardaein is considered to be a flavonoid. Monardaein is a secondary metabolite. Secondary metabolites are metabolically or physiologically non-essential metabolites that may serve a role as defense or signalling molecules. In some cases they are simply molecules that arise from the incomplete metabolism of other secondary metabolites. Monardaein is found in Agastache aurantiaca, Gilia coronopifolia, Hyacinthus orientalis, Monarda didyma , Salvia coccinea , Salvia splendens and Salvia spp. . Based on a literature review very few articles have been published on monardaein. |
