DescriptionPilloin belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 7-o-methylated flavonoids. These are flavonoids with methoxy groups attached to the C7 atom of the flavonoid backbone. Thus, pilloin is considered to be a flavonoid lipid molecule. 5-Hydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-7-methoxy-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one is found in Adenothamnus validus, Alnus japonica , Antirrhinum braun-blanquetii, Antirrhinum graniticum, Argyrochosma nivea, Arnica acaulis, Arnica longifolia, Artemisia gmelinii, Artemisia iwayomogi, Baccharis crispa, Baccharis salicifolia, Baccharis trinervis , Belliolum gracile, Chromolaena odorata, Eriodictyon californicum, Eucryphia milliganii, Garcinia bracteata, Garcinia brevipedicellata, Godmania aesculifolia, Gyrinops walla, Isodon umbrosus, Leucas cephalotes, Lychnophora affinis, Lycopus virginicus , Marrubium cylleneum, Notholaena nivea, Onopordum laconicum, Orthosiphon spicatus, Ovidia pillo-pillo, Piper auritum , Piper sylvaticum, Plumeria rubra, Prunus persica, Salvia palaestina, Sideritis soluta, Tasmannia piperita, Triticum aestivum and Vitex trifolia. Pilloin is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral.
