Xanthene is a tricyclic compound made up of two benzene rings linearly fused to each other through a pyran ring. 1,3,7,8-Tetrahydroxanthone is found in Canscora alata, Canscora decussata , Chironia krebsii, Gentiana bavarica, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, Orphium frutescens, Swertia chirata , Swertia ciliata, Swertia dilatata, Swertia erythrosticta, Swertia gracilescens, Swertia hookeri, Swertia iberica, Swertia japonica , Swertia lawii , Swertia nervosa, Swertia perennis, Swertia purpurascens, Swertia racemosa , Swertia swertiopsis and Swertia swertopsis. Norswertianin is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa).
