Description | Docosapentaenoic acid (22n-3), also known as docosapentaenoate or DPA, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as very long-chain fatty acids. These are fatty acids with an aliphatic tail that contains at least 22 carbon atoms. Docosapentaenoic acid (22n-3) is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. Within humans, docosapentaenoic acid (22N-3) participates in a number of enzymatic reactions. In particular, docosapentaenoic acid (22N-3) can be biosynthesized from eicosapentaenoic acid through the action of the enzyme elongation OF very long chain fatty acids protein 5. In addition, docosapentaenoic acid (22N-3) can be converted into tetracosapentaenoic acid (24:5N-3); which is catalyzed by the enzyme elongation OF very long chain fatty acids protein 4. In humans, docosapentaenoic acid (22N-3) is involved in alpha linolenic acid and linoleic acid metabolism. Outside of the human body, Docosapentaenoic acid (22n-3) is found, on average, in the highest concentration within a few different foods, such as anguilliformes, milk (cow), and salmonidae (salmon, trout) and in a lower concentration in eggs, gadus (common cod), and norway lobsters. Docosapentaenoic acid (22n-3) has also been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as lentils, lingonberries, prunus (cherry, plum), soft drinks, and other fruit products. This could make docosapentaenoic acid (22N-3) a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Docosapentaenoic acid (22n-3), with regard to humans, has been found to be associated with the diseases such as colorectal cancer; docosapentaenoic acid (22N-3) has also been linked to the inborn metabolic disorder isovaleric acidemia. 7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z,19Z-Docosapentaenoic acid is found in Homo sapiens and Homo sapiens (Serum).
