| Description | Ergosterol peroxide, also known as 5a,8a-peroxyergosterol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as ergostane steroids. These are steroids with a structure based on the ergostane skeleton, which arises from the methylation of cholestane at the 24-position. Ergosterol peroxide is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, ergosterol peroxide has been detected, but not quantified in, fruits and pineapples. This could make ergosterol peroxide a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
