Common NamePhenylmethyl 2-methylpropanoate
DescriptionPhenylmethyl 2-methylpropanoate, also known as benzyl 2-methyl propionate or benzyl isobutanoate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as benzyloxycarbonyls. These are organic compounds containing a carbonyl group substituted with a benzyloxyl group. Phenylmethyl 2-methylpropanoate is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Phenylmethyl 2-methylpropanoate is a sweet, fruity, and jasmine tasting compound. Outside of the human body, Phenylmethyl 2-methylpropanoate has been detected, but not quantified in, a few different foods, such as alcoholic beverages, fruits, and spearmints. Phenylmethyl 2-methylpropanoate is found in Tanacetum parthenium. This could make phenylmethyl 2-methylpropanoate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
