Description3,8-Dihydroxy-1-methylanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid, also known as dmac-3,8, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as anthracenecarboxylic acids. These are organic compounds containing a carboxylic acid group attached to an anthracene ring system. 3,8-Dihydroxy-1-methylanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, 3,8-Dihydroxy-1-methylanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid has been detected, but not quantified in, saffrons. 3,8-Dihydroxy-1-methylanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid is found in Streptomyces albidoflavus. This could make 3,8-dihydroxy-1-methylanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
