| Description | Petunin belongs to the class of organic compounds known as anthocyanidin-5-o-glycosides. These are phenolic compounds containing one anthocyanidin moiety which is O-glycosidically linked to a carbohydrate moiety at the C5-position. Petunin is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, Petunin has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as alfalfa, alcoholic beverages, common beans, rose hips, and yellow wax beans. Petunin is found in Aristotelia chilensis , Crocus antalyensis, Crocus sieberi, Cyclamen persicum , Fuchsia spp., Gladiolus spp., Metrosideros spp., Passiflora quadrangularis , Pelargonium dolomiticum, Petunia x hybrida, Renealmia regmelliana, Rosa spp., Saxifraga spp., Solanum tuberosum, Vicia spp. and Vitis rotundifolia . This could make petunin a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. |
