Common NameThymusin
DescriptionThymusin belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 8-o-methylated flavonoids. These are flavonoids with methoxy groups attached to the C8 atom of the flavonoid backbone. Thus, thymusin is considered to be a flavonoid lipid molecule. Thymusin is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. Outside of the human body, Thymusin has been detected, but not quantified in, peppermints. Thymusin is found in Mentha piperita, Mentha pulegium, Mentha spicata, Nepeta assurgens, Origanum akhadarense, Origanum boissieri, Origanum calcaratum, Origanum dictamnus , Origanum floribundum, Origanum hypercifolium, Origanum intercedens, Origanum majorana , Origanum micranthum, Origanum microphyllum, Origanum onites , Origanum syriacum , Origanum vulgare , Origanum vulgare subsp. Glandulosum , Origanum vulgare subsp. Hirtum , Thymus herba-barona , Thymus membranaceus and Thymus moroderi . This could make thymusin a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
