Common NameNeohesperidin dihydrochalcone
DescriptionNeohesperidin dihydrochalcone, also known as neohesperidin DC or E959, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as flavonoid o-glycosides. Flavonoid O-glycosides are compounds containing a carbohydrate moiety which is O-glycosidically linked to the 2-phenylchromen-4-one flavonoid backbone. Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone, sometimes abbreviated to neohesperidin DC or simply NHDC, is an artificial sweetener derived from citrus. Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone is a bland tasting compound. Outside of the human body, Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone has been detected, but not quantified in, sweet oranges. This could make neohesperidin dihydrochalcone a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. NHDC in pure form is found as a white substance not unlike powdered sugar. Like other flavonoids, NHDC is easily metabolized by intestinal microbiota to innocuous products. Neohesperidin is one such bitter compound.
