Natural Product Identification
Common NameHomoferreirin
DescriptionHomoferreirin belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 4'-o-methylated isoflavonoids. These are isoflavonoids with methoxy groups attached to the C4' atom of the isoflavonoid backbone. Isoflavonoids are natural products derived from 3-phenylchromen-4-one. Thus, homoferreirin is considered to be a flavonoid lipid molecule. Homoferreirin is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. Outside of the human body, Homoferreirin has been detected, but not quantified in, chickpea and pulses. This could make homoferreirin a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Homoferreirin is found in Argyrocytisus battandieri, Desmodium oojeinense, Ferreirea spectabilis, Flemingia macrophylla , Haplormosia monophylla, Ougeinia dalbergioides and Zollernia paraensis. A dihydroxyflavanone that is flavanone substituted by hydroxy groups at positions 5 and 7 and methoxy groups at positions 2' and 4' respectively.
