DescriptionOxalic acid, also known as ethanedioic acid or ethandisaeure, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as dicarboxylic acids and derivatives. These are organic compounds containing exactly two carboxylic acid groups. Oxalic acid exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Oxalic acid is a primary metabolite. Primary metabolites are metabolically or physiologically essential metabolites. They are directly involved in an organism’s growth, development or reproduction. Oxalic acid, with regard to humans, has been found to be associated with several diseases such as hemodialysis and uremia; oxalic acid has also been linked to several inborn metabolic disorders including primary hyperoxaluria I, fumarase deficiency, and glycolic aciduria. Oxalate is found in Actinidia arguta, Albizia julibrissin, Alocasia odora, Aloe vera, Amaranthus tricolor, Ammodendron bifolium, Beta vulgaris, Bulgaria inquinans, Parasenecio hastatus, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Colocasia esculenta, Colocasia escultenta, Curcuma domestica , Echinopsis chamaecereus, Glehnia littoralis, Herniaria hirsuta, Imperata cylindrica, Lotus corniculatus, Lupinus albus, Lupinus luteus, Morus nigra, Opuntia microdasys, Oxalis tuberosa, Paraburkholderia phymatum, Paris fargesii, Parthenium hysterophorus, Penicillium oxalicum, Phoenix dactylifera, Phyllostachys edulis, Plinia cauliflora, Populus lasiocarpa, Populus tremula, Portulaca oleracea, Prunus salicina, Rhodiola rosea, Rosa spinosissima, Salmonella enterica, Sambucus nigra, Sclerotinia trifoliorum, Solanum tuberosum, Sclerotium cepivorum, Telekia speciosa, Terminalia chebula , Thymus transcaucasicus, Ulmus glabra, Vaccinium macrocarpon, Viburnum opulus and Xanthosoma sagittifolium. Oxalate was first documented in 1999 (PMID: 10196036). Based on a literature review a small amount of articles have been published on Oxalic acid (PMID: 12563622) (PMID: 12682898) (PMID: 10886075).
