Common Name3-Oxohexanoyl-CoA
Description3-Oxohexanoyl-CoA, also known as 3-ketohexanoyl coa., Belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 3-oxo-acyl coas. These are organic compounds containing a 3-oxo acylated coenzyme A derivative. 3-Oxohexanoyl-CoA is a strong basic compound (based on its pKa). 3-Oxohexanoyl-CoA exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. 3-Oxohexanoyl-CoA is the 3rd to last step in the synthesis of Hexanoyl-CoA and is converted from Butanoyl-CoA via the enzyme acetyl-CoA acyltransferase 2 (EC2.3.1.16). In humans, 3-oxohexanoyl-CoA is involved in the metabolic disorder called the carnitine palmitoyl transferase deficiency II pathway. Outside of the human body, 3-Oxohexanoyl-CoA has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as sapodilla, tartary buckwheats, lettuces, grass pea, and common grapes. This could make 3-oxohexanoyl-CoA a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. It is then converted to (S)-Hydroxyhexanoyl-CoA via the 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (16). 3-Oxohexanoyl-CoA is an intermediate in Fatty acid elongation in mitochondria.
