| Description | 4-Hydroxyisovaleric acid, also known as 4-hydroxyisopentanoate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as hydroxy fatty acids. These are fatty acids in which the chain bears a hydroxyl group. 4-Hydroxyisovaleric acid is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral. 4-Hydroxyisovaleric acid, with regard to humans, has been linked to the inborn metabolic disorder isovaleric acidemia. The effects of HMB on human skeletal muscle were first discovered by Steven L. 4-Hydroxyisovaleric acid was first documented in 1981 (PMID: 6452974). Nissen at Iowa State University in the mid-1990s. |
