| Common Name | 4-Aminobutanal |

| Description | 4-Aminobutyraldehyde, also known as 4-amino-butanal, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as alpha-hydrogen aldehydes. These are aldehydes with the general formula HC(H)(R)C(=O)H, where R is an organyl group. 4-Aminobutyraldehyde is a very strong basic compound (based on its pKa). 4-Aminobutyraldehyde exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. Outside of the human body, 4-Aminobutyraldehyde has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as chinese bayberries, sour cherries, romaine lettuces, black salsifies, and green zucchinis. This could make 4-aminobutyraldehyde a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. 4-Aminobutanal is found in Escherichia coli and Santalum album . 4-Aminobutanal was first documented in 1987 (PMID: 3324802). An omega-aminoaldehyde that is butanal in which one of the hydrogens of the terminal methyl group has been replaced by an amino group (PMID: 8269919) (PMID: 8112751) (PMID: 1799975) (PMID: 8645224). |
